Ito Shinsui has here created a composition of planes and patterns in bold juxtaposition of yellow, black and grey; the traditional image of the back and nape of a female figure in Japanese Art is here made 'modern' in the reflection of her face and hand as she applies her powder; the face in the mirror with its fine clarity and red accent becomes thus the focus of the extraordinary composition.
